A five minute walk down the street from my college was Hope High School, a chronically under-resourced school that served a predominantly students of color and low-income students. My friend taught a spoken word poetry workshop there, and came back one day struggling with the disparities between our environments, despite their proximity in physical space. This is inspired by the creative & talented young people she met there.

lyrics
Charlie’s down by the shore
He couldn’t ask for much more
There is sand between his toes
He wished that everyone could know that sea-smell glee
Ohh he’s one son
On the other side of the bay
David’s skipping rocks on a cold, cold day
There’s a tear inside his town
And it’s takin’ him down
Ohh two sons
Chorus
But with this great divide
There is a spark inside that burns the same
Cause Charlie and David see the same world that’s in front of me
Under different suns
Charlie’s out on the swings
Every push from dad gives him stronger wings
David’s home alone
He only sees the sky from a cracked window
Ohh two sons
Chorus
But with this great divide
There is a spark inside that burns the same
Cause Charlie and David see the same world that’s in front of me
Under different suns
Bridge
A child’s eyes are born so wide
Every baby has ready hands
But walls start to grow right up to the sky
And dreams start to go on one of two sides
While Dave lives in shadows and Charles takes the light
Ohh two sons
Ohh two suns
